The questions our customers ask most — and honest answers you can act on.
Working with Matt's Garage.
How much does auto repair cost at Matt's Garage?
We provide a written estimate before any work begins. Common repairs: brake job $280–$480 per axle, oil change $59–$99, diagnostic $129 (credited to repair), alternator $450–$780, and battery replacement $189–$329 installed. No surprise fees — ever.
Do you offer a warranty on repairs?
Yes. Every repair is backed by a 24-month / 24,000-mile nationwide warranty on both parts and labor — one of the strongest warranties in the independent repair industry.
Do I need an appointment?
Appointments guarantee you a bay and a technician. We recommend booking online or by phone for anything larger than an oil change. Walk-ins are welcome for diagnostics and quick services when bays are open.
Can I wait for my car?
Yes. We have a clean, quiet lounge with Wi-Fi, coffee, and a workspace. For longer repairs we offer local shuttle service and can arrange a loaner or rental.
Will service at Matt's Garage void my factory warranty?
No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, an independent shop performing scheduled maintenance and repairs cannot void your manufacturer warranty. We document every service to protect your coverage.
Do you work on all makes and models?
Yes. Domestic and import — Ford, Chevy, GMC, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and more. Gas, diesel, and hybrid.
How is Matt's Garage different from a dealership?
Same OEM-level tools and training, half the labor rate, and you deal directly with the technician working on your car. No service advisor commissions and no upsell pressure.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We partner with third-party financing providers offering 6-month same-as-cash and longer-term plans, subject to approval. Ask your service writer for current options.
Auto Repair
Do you work on all makes and models?
Yes. We service every major domestic and import brand — Ford, Chevy, GMC, Ram, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Hyundai, Kia, VW, BMW, Mercedes, and more.
Will repairing my car at Matt's Garage void my factory warranty?
No. Federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) protects your right to have maintenance and repairs performed at any qualified shop without voiding your manufacturer warranty.
How long will my repair take?
Most repairs are completed the same day. Larger jobs like transmission or engine work receive a written completion date up front.
Brake Repair
How often should brake pads be replaced?
Most brake pads last 30,000 to 70,000 miles depending on driving style, vehicle weight, and pad material. We measure pad thickness at every oil change so you never get caught by surprise.
Can I just replace pads without new rotors?
Sometimes. If your rotors are within manufacturer thickness spec and have no deep scoring or heat damage, we can resurface them. If not, replacing them is cheaper long-term than premature pad wear.
How much does a brake job cost?
A typical front-axle brake job with pads and rotors runs $280–$480 depending on the vehicle. You'll always get a written estimate before we start.
Oil Changes
How often should I change my oil?
Follow your owner's manual. Most modern vehicles running full-synthetic oil are engineered for 7,500 to 10,000-mile intervals, while conventional oil should be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
Do I need full synthetic?
If your manufacturer specifies synthetic (most vehicles built after 2012), yes — using conventional oil can void your powertrain warranty. Synthetic also protects better in extreme heat and cold.
How long does an oil change take?
Most oil changes are completed in 30 minutes. We recommend booking ahead so you can wait in our lounge or drop off.
Preventative Maintenance
What's included in a 60,000 mile service?
Typically transmission fluid exchange, coolant flush, spark plugs, air and cabin filters, brake fluid, and a full inspection. Exact items vary by manufacturer — we build the service to your VIN.
Is preventative maintenance really worth it?
Yes. Industry data shows that preventative maintenance prevents roughly 80% of unexpected breakdowns and adds 40–60% to the useful life of most vehicles.
Engine Diagnostics
How much does engine diagnostics cost?
Our diagnostic fee is $129 and includes up to one hour of pinpoint testing. If you approve the recommended repair, the diagnostic fee is credited toward that repair.
Isn't a free code read at the parts store enough?
A code tells you where the vehicle sees a problem — not what's causing it. Replacing parts based on a code alone is why customers end up spending $600 on sensors when a $40 vacuum hose was the real fix.
Check Engine Light Diagnostics
Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
If the light is solid and the vehicle drives normally, it's usually safe for a few days — bring it in soon. If the light is flashing, pull over and call us. A flashing light means active misfire that can destroy your catalytic converter within miles.
Can you just clear the light?
We can, but if we don't fix the underlying cause the light will come back — often within a drive cycle. We prefer to diagnose and repair, not mask the symptom.
Transmission Service
How often should transmission fluid be changed?
Most automatics benefit from a fluid exchange every 60,000 miles — earlier if you tow, live in extreme heat, or drive stop-and-go. CVTs often specify shorter intervals; we build the schedule to your VIN.
Should I flush or exchange transmission fluid?
We do exchanges, not high-pressure flushes. Exchanges use the transmission's own pump to circulate new fluid — safer for older units and endorsed by most manufacturers.
Battery Replacement
How long do car batteries last?
Most car batteries last 3 to 5 years. Extreme heat is harder on batteries than cold — if you live somewhere hot, plan on the shorter end of that range.
Do I need to register a new battery?
Many vehicles built after 2010 — especially European brands and stop/start-equipped models — require battery registration so the charging system knows the new battery's age. We handle it as part of the install.
Electrical Repair
Why is electrical diagnosis so expensive?
Electrical faults are often intermittent, and finding them requires methodical testing — sometimes 2 to 4 hours. A proper diagnosis is always cheaper than replacing modules by trial and error.
Can you program modules like the dealer?
Yes. We use OEM-level scan tools that support module programming, key coding, and adaptations for most makes.
Starter & Alternator Repair
How do I know if it's the starter or the battery?
A quick charging system test tells us in minutes. Generally, a clicking sound with dim lights points to a battery or connection; a single click with normal lights usually points to the starter solenoid or motor.
Suspension & Steering
Do I need an alignment after suspension work?
Yes. Any repair that disturbs a steering or suspension component changes the alignment angles. Driving without a follow-up alignment will ruin new tires in a matter of weeks.
Wheel Alignment
How often should I get an alignment?
We recommend an alignment check once a year, at every tire replacement, and after any suspension work or hard impact with a pothole or curb.
Tire Services
Can you repair a flat tire?
If the puncture is in the tread area, under 1/4" wide, and the tire has not been driven flat, we can perform a patch-plug repair — the only industry-approved method. Sidewall damage cannot be safely repaired.
Cooling System Repair
How often should coolant be changed?
Long-life coolants generally last 5 years or 100,000 miles. We test coolant condition at every service — bad coolant destroys water pumps and radiators, so we don't wait for the calendar to lie to us.
Radiator Repair
Can a leaking radiator be repaired instead of replaced?
Modern radiators use plastic tanks that don't respond well to sealants. In almost every case, replacement is safer and cheaper long-term than a temporary repair.
AC & Heating Repair
Why does my AC only need refrigerant every summer?
AC systems are sealed — they don't consume refrigerant. If you need a recharge every year, you have a leak. We find it and repair it once, instead of paying for refrigerant every season.
Fleet Maintenance
Do you service commercial vans and light-duty trucks?
Yes — Ford Transit, Chevy Express, Mercedes Sprinter, Ram Promaster, Nissan NV, F-150 through F-350, Silverado, Ram 1500-3500, and more.
Pre-Purchase Vehicle Inspection
How much does a pre-purchase inspection cost?
$179 for cars and light SUVs, $199 for trucks and heavier SUVs. Cheaper than one surprise repair after you buy the wrong vehicle.
How long does it take?
Plan on 60 to 90 minutes. If the seller won't give you that time, that itself is important information.
Performance Upgrades
Will performance upgrades void my warranty?
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects your right to modify — but the manufacturer can deny coverage on components directly affected by a modification. We'll advise on what's safe and what's a warranty risk.
